What is SWYAA?
(Ship for World Youth Alumni Association) is a comprehensive naming for all the alumni associations established by the past participants (ex-PYs) of the Ship for World Youth (SWY) program.

Each country has an association, founded for the purpose of continuing the spirit that was fostered through the SWY program. The main activities of the SWYAAs include, but are not limited to, updating contact information for members, planning and managing post-program activities such as those that contribute to society in their country, strengthening ties with Japanese Embassies and the Government of Japan, as well as supporting future participants of the program.

There are five main objectives of the SWYAA:
  • To provide a means of communication for the former and present participants of the SWY program.
  • To provide a means of communication between Alumni Association members and the Japanese Government.
  • To provide information and develop domestic and international networks.
  • To organize activities locally and internationally which would establish new social, volunteer and development initiatives.
  • To strengthen relationships among Alumni Associations in order to achieve common goals.

Movement to Establish SWYAA and Its History
The fundamental first step towards this vision took place at a gathering in February 1994, during the 6th SWY program in Piraeus, Greece, a port of call. Through correspondence with Japanese alumni from the 4th program, ex-PYs from Hungary and Sweden converged at the docked Nippon Maru.

The original document outlining the Ship for World Youth Alumni Association (SWYAA) was compiled by ex-PYs from the 3rd and 5th programs who attended the 1st Ship for World Youth International Reunion (eastern route), and the members of the 7th SWY program.
