Annual Report (Mauritius, 2002)
The SWY AA Mauritius has organised a few activities last year. Most of them has been organised in collaboration with other NGO's/Organisations being given that we have only 11 members and limited funds. Below is a brief of the activiies organised.
March: Open day - Information Technology - This activity was organised in collaboration with a youth centre. It consisted of the display and sale of It equipments by local traders under one roof and at reduced price. Crash course on it was also run at the intention of students of colleges in the region. In addition the cyber caravan of computers of the ministry of IT was invited to initiate young people to Internet. It was a very successful activity.
May: Traditional Kite Flying Competition - This activity was organised with the help on a company manufacturing kites. The company kindly agreed to sponsor the prizes. The activity consisted of constructing traditional kites and flying them . Basic materials were provided to all participants - around 150 from three categories. The main objective was to promote this traditional leisure activity (which is almost disappearing nowadays) among the young people.
July: Environment Day - This activity consisted of cleaning a remote village, planting decorative plants, distribution of bins to the inhabitants and a talk on environment protection. It was organised with the help of the south district council and regional youth council.
September: Seminar on Substance Abuse - This seminar regrouped some 100 young people and aimed at:
(A) Sensitise young people on the dangers of sustance abuse.
(B) Strengthen the network to eradicate this social ill in the region.
It was organised in collaboration with the National Agency for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Drug Addicts.
December: Youth Musical Concert - This activity was the last activity of the year and benefited the support of many sponsors and a youth centre. The objective was to give an opportunity to local regional artists to perform and show their talents. Songs, dances, eSegaf fashion show and musical performance were among the many ingredients of this activity.
